Joseph Safra

Early Life

Joseph Safra was born in Beirut and was fortunate to be born into a well-known banking family. The Safra family had been involved in financial affairs for a long time, with their wealth originating from caravan routes between Aleppo, Alexandria, and Constantinople during the Ottoman Empire. In 1952, the Safra family moved to Beirut, and in 1955, Joseph's father, Jacob Safra, and his brother, Edmond Safra, actively began establishing a new family business in São Paulo.

Establishment of Banco Safra

While Edmond Safra later moved to New York and founded the Republic National Bank of New York, Joseph Safra remained in Brazil. In the 1960s, he founded Banco Safra in São Paulo. The project was incredibly successful, and at one point, Banco Safra was one of the six largest private banks in Brazil. Although currently the ninth-largest bank in Brazil, Joseph Safra did not stop there.

Expansion and Safra Group

Joseph Safra's ambition led him to expand his business further. In November, his company, Banco Safra, spent approximately $1.1 billion to gain control over the Swiss private bank, Bank Sarasin. It is believed that this acquisition is just the beginning, as Safra Group continues to pursue opportunities to acquire less successful players in the banking industry.

Safra Group and Ownership

Joseph Safra is currently the chairman of Safra Group, a company that provides banking services in Europe and the Americas. He recently acquired the remaining shares of Safra Group from his brother, Moise Safra, although they still jointly own the company Fibria Cellulose.

Overall, Joseph Safra's leadership and entrepreneurial skills have made him one of the most influential figures in the banking industry, with a significant impact on the global financial landscape.
