Early Life and Background
Joscelin I was born in 1112 as the younger son of Joscelin de Courtenay, Lord of Courtenay, and Isabelle de Montlhéry. He was a cousin of Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem.
Arrival in the Holy Land
Joscelin I traveled to Palestine and established himself as a notable figure. In 1118, he assumed the title of Prince of Galilee, a position he held until his death.
Reign as Count of Edessa
In 1118, Baldwin II, Joscelin's cousin, acceded to the throne of Jerusalem. Subsequently, Joscelin became Count of Edessa, marking the beginning of a period of great prosperity for the county.
Marriage Alliance
Joscelin I strengthened his political ties by marrying Beatrice, the sister of Thoros I, King of Cilicia. Beatrice belonged to the Armenian royal family, the Rubenids.
Death and Legacy
Joscelin I's reign was cut short when he was fatally wounded in battle against the Danishmends in 1131. His death brought an end to his leadership over the County of Edessa.
