Biography of Joy Johnson
Joy Johnson was an 86-year-old American runner who gained global attention in November 2013 after her death, which occurred the day after she completed the famous New York City Marathon. Johnson, a resident of San Jose, California, had crossed the marathon finish line for the 25th time. It took her approximately 8 hours to complete the race, and in previous years, she had finished in about 5 hours. In 1991, she even completed the marathon in 3 hours and 55 minutes. However, as people age, they tend to become slower.

A Life Dedicated to Sports
Joy Johnson had worked as a physical education teacher for many years and had also spent a significant amount of time working in specialized sports camps. In addition to her coaching career, she actively participated in various major sporting events, including marathons in freezing temperatures in Minnesota. Johnson expressed gratitude for being able to wake up every morning and run, stating, "I praise the Lord that I can get up and run."

A Dramatic Last Marathon
During her final marathon in New York City, Johnson had an unfortunate fall around the 20-mile mark, injuring her head. Many believed she would withdraw from the race, but she persevered and completed it. Medical assistance was provided to her, and photos of Johnson after the marathon showed her face adorned with bandages. The day after the race, she appeared on the outdoor talk show "The Today Show," but she was already feeling unwell. Johnson refused to go to the hospital and jokingly brushed off questions about her bandages, claiming they looked worse than they actually were. After the interview, she returned to her hotel room, laid down on her bed, and peacefully passed away in her sleep.

A True Passion for Running
Joy Johnson's daughter, Diana Boydston, stated that her mother died exactly as she wanted - while running. Johnson was the oldest female runner in the marathon and one of 31 participants over the age of 80 out of a total of 50,000 participants in 2013. The debate about the benefits of such physical activities for elderly people continues, with compelling arguments from both sides. Nevertheless, Joy Johnson, at the age of 86, died doing what she loved - running, and achieving another personal record.
