Biography of Joyce Michel
Joyce Marie Kmiecik, better known as Joyce Michel, is an American fashion designer, inventor, and entrepreneur. She has worked on numerous fashion projects for various popular fashion organizations, both as a regular designer and as a lead designer and creative director. Currently, Michel is the head of her own fashion house, 'Joyce Michel New York', which produces clothing lines for men, women, and children.
Early Life and Education
Joyce Marie Kmiecik was born to John Adam Kmiecik and Therese Joyce McGuiness. She was the eldest of nine children. In 1969, she successfully completed her high school education, where she discovered her passion for sewing and tailoring under the guidance of her godmother. During her senior years, Joyce showcased her designs to the public for the first time and received warm reception for her school cheerleaders' uniform project.
She received a scholarship to attend St. Thomas University in 1969 and later transferred to the University of Texas for two years. Joyce was selected as one of eight students to participate in a new program to become a certified physician's assistant. However, she decided to pursue further degrees as a candidate for a doctorate, although she did not complete this ambitious project as she found her true calling later on.
A Love for Architecture and Real Estate
Joyce inherited a love for architecture from her family. Her grandfather was an architect, and her father built the family home. Inspired by her godmother's success as an architect, Joyce ventured into the real estate business. She excelled in her realtor activities and eventually opened her own school for aspiring real estate agents. However, during Jimmy Carter's presidency, increased interest rates resulted in a significant drop in Joyce's income. She was forced to start over, and it was during this time that she delved into the fashion industry, realizing it was her true passion.
Leaving the real estate business behind, Joyce left New Orleans and moved to the renowned school associated with the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. She continued her education in Paris and later New York City at Parsons School of Design. During her studies, Joyce had the opportunity to work with Jimmy Galanos from 'Galanos Originals'.
Success in the Fashion Industry
Joyce completed her studies in 1984 and quickly secured a position working on a project with Donna Karan. Her innovative idea became the foundation for a new line of products for Karan, which proved to be revolutionary. After working for various companies of different levels of popularity, Joyce relocated to the East Coast. There, she played a significant role in the creation of the 'Lightweight Hikers' footwear line, which was highly innovative and introduced an interesting color palette. The new footwear became a sales hit overnight.
