Joyce Randolph: A Pioneer on Broadway and Screen

Early Life and Acting Career

Joyce Randolph was born in Detroit on October 21, 1924, to Finnish immigrants. After graduating from high school, she worked in retail. Her acting career began when she auditioned for a role in the touring production of "Stage Door" when it visited Detroit. She joined the cast and performed with them for the remainder of the tour.

Randolph moved to New York City in 1943 to pursue her acting career. She made her Broadway debut in 1946 in "Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath." She also appeared in various television roles. In 1951, her prominence in commercials led to her being cast in parodies. Shortly after, she landed the role of Trixie in the sitcom "The Honeymooners."

"The Honeymooners" and Broadway Success

Randolph became the last surviving cast member from the original "The Honeymooners" series. On Broadway, she starred in "Ladies Night in a Turkish Bath." Despite her success as Trixie, Randolph claimed that directors were hesitant to cast her in other roles due to her strong association with the character. She performed in summer stock productions, did commercials, and made guest appearances on television shows.

Personal Life and Legacy

Randolph married Richard Lincoln Charles, a wealthy marketing executive, on October 2, 1955, the day after the premiere of "The Honeymooners." Richard Charles passed away in 1997 at the age of 74. Their son, Randolph Richard Charles (born in 1960), is a marketing executive.

Joyce Randolph passed away on January 13, 2024, at the age of 99, in her New York City home. She had been under hospice care in her final years due to various health issues. Randolph's legacy as a pioneering actress on Broadway and screen continues to inspire generations of performers.
