Władysław Pochwalski

Life and Family

Władysław Pochwalski was born into a prominent Polish family of artists in Kraków. His father, Kasper Apolinary Pochwalski, was also a respected painter. Władysław was the father of two renowned artists: Kazimierz Pochwalski and Władysław Pochwalski.

Education and Training

Pochwalski studied at the Kraków Engineering School from 1836 to 1837. During his time there, he received instruction in drawing from Jan Nepomuk Bizański.

Artistic Career

Pochwalski lived and worked in Kraków, becoming a member of the city's guild of artists. He primarily focused on easel painting, creating a significant body of works. Additionally, he engaged in the restoration and painting of churches.

Political Involvement and Imprisonment

In 1846, Pochwalski participated in the Kraków Uprising. As a result, he was arrested and incarcerated for a period of time. While imprisoned, he carved wooden spoons adorned with patriotic symbols. These artifacts are preserved today in the Benedictine Convent in Staniątki.

Legacy

Pochwalski's remains are interred in Kraków's Rakowicki Cemetery. His artistic contributions and his involvement in the struggle for Polish independence have left a lasting mark on Polish culture and history.
