Biography of Józef Maria Bocheński
Józef Maria Bocheński was a Polish philosopher and logician, as well as a Dominican. He was born in 1902 into a family of wealthy landowners. Bocheński actively participated in the campaign against the Soviet Union.
From 1920 to 1926, he studied jurisprudence at the University of Lviv, and later economics at the University of Poznań. In 1927, Bocheński joined the Dominican Order. He then pursued philosophy and pedagogy at the University of Fribourg from 1928 to 1931, successfully defending his dissertation in 1931. He continued his education in Rome, studying theology at the Pontifical University from 1931 to 1934, and obtaining a degree in theology.
During his time in Rome, Bocheński also focused on the study of logic. He established strong connections with the Polish analytical school. Throughout World War II, he served in the Polish army in Scotland and Italy. In 1945, Bocheński began teaching at the Department of 20th Century Philosophy at the University of Fribourg, and from 1964 to 1966, he held the position of rector at the university. As a guest professor, he frequently visited the United States.
Bocheński served as a consultant for several governments, including West Germany, South Africa, the United States, Argentina, and Switzerland. In 1972, he became an emeritus professor. He passed away in 1995.
Bocheński is rightfully considered the founder of Sovietology. His works primarily focused on the history of philosophy and the history of logic, and he conducted research on important problems through the lens of logic. He regarded the philosophy of religion as the logic of religion.
