Saint John Alcober, O.P.

Early Life and Religious Vocation

John Alcober was born into a noble family in Valencia, Spain, on January 3, 1694. At the age of 14, he entered the novitiate of the Dominican Order, where he was known for his humility and piety.

Priestly Ministry in Spain and the Philippines

In 1718, Alcober was ordained a priest and served in various parishes in Spain. In 1725, he was sent as a missionary to the Philippines, where he studied Chinese in preparation for his mission to China.

Mission to China

In 1728, Alcober embarked on his journey to China, where he zealously preached the Christian faith. As persecution against Catholics intensified, he went into hiding, residing in the homes of faithful believers.

Martyrdom and Arrest

On June 26, 1746, Alcober's whereabouts were discovered. He was arrested and imprisoned in Fuzhou. After two years of imprisonment, he was sentenced to death by strangulation.

Execution and Canonization

On October 25, 1748, John Alcober was martyred for his faith. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, along with 120 other Chinese martyrs. His feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on July 9.
