Early Life and Ecclesiastical Career
Archduke Karl Joseph of Austria was born to Emperor Ferdinand III and Archduchess Maria Leopoldina. At the tender age of 13, he was appointed Bishops of Olomouc and Passau.
Inheritance and Grand Mastership
In 1662, upon the death of his uncle, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, Karl inherited a vast collection of artworks. He also became the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order.
Archbishopric of Wrocław
On February 23, 1663, Karl was elevated to Archbishop of Wrocław, receiving his consecration from Pope Alexander VII. He assumed the ecclesiastical name of Karl III.
Unfulfilled Potential and Burial
Due to his young age, Karl was unable to fully fulfill his ecclesiastical duties. His tenure was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 15. As a member of the House of Habsburg, he was laid to rest in the family crypt at the Capuchin Church in Vienna.
