Francisco López de Gómara
Francisco López de Gómara, a Spanish humanist and historian of the 16th century, was a renowned poet who served as a tutor to the young pages of Charles V's son, Philip II, and later served Philip himself. He held the official title of "Chronicler of the Indies."
Early Life and Education
Born sometime between 1500 and 1510, the exact location of Gómara's birth is uncertain, with some claiming it to be Sariñena and others Sabadell. As a youth, he studied at Alcalá de Henares with the renowned Hernán Núñez and was a disciple of Jerónimo de Zurita. For many years, he resided in Salamanca, attending the university to study classical languages. He likely spent his final years there, passing away in 1593 and being buried in the Monastery of Saint Francis in Salamanca.
Historical Works
Gómara's primary occupation was the writing of history, most notably his "History of the Indies." This work chronicled the major expeditions of Spanish explorers and conquistadors.
Geographical Studies
In addition to his historical writings, Gómara also authored extensive works on geography, such as "Calvete de Estrella."
Literary Contributions
Beyond his historical and geographical works, Gómara left behind scientific letters, Latin verses, and religious poems. He dedicated poems to Garcilaso, opening the book "Las Anotaciones de El Brocense," as well as to Hernando de Acuña, Ramírez de Aro, Juan Bravo, and Antic de Roca.
