Early Career and Rise at MurciaSpanish footballer Juan Valera began his professional journey at his hometown club, Murcia. On December 7, 2003, he made his professional debut in the Segunda División against Villarreal. In the 2003/04 season, Murcia won promotion to La Liga, but Valera primarily featured for the reserves, only making three first-team appearances. The following season, his role increased, and he played 10 matches in La Liga, starting five. However, Murcia was relegated at the end of the campaign.
In the 2005/06 season, Valera became a key player for Murcia, impressing with his physical prowess and defensive skills. He caught the attention of Atlético Madrid scouts, who acquired him in the summer of 2005.
Breakthrough and Injury Setbacks
At Atlético Madrid, Valera enjoyed a successful first season, playing 17 matches and scoring two goals. However, in the 2006/07 season, a serious knee injury at the Vicente Calderón derailed his progress. He missed a significant amount of time and lost his place in the lineup, appearing in only 16 matches over two seasons.
Redemption at Racing Santander and Return to Atlético
Ahead of the 2008/09 season, Atlético loaned Valera to Racing Santander for a year. Racing had qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in their history. Valera fit seamlessly into the team and gradually regained his form. In the 2009/10 season, he returned to Atlético and helped them reach the final of the Copa del Rey and win the Europa League.
International Career
Valera has represented Spain at the U-21 level. In 2005, he won the Mediterranean Games with the U-23 team.
