Judith Anderson, an American actress originally from Australia, was born in Adelaide, South Australia. Born Francis Margaret Anderson, she was an exceptional actress who was unable to duplicate her stage success in Hollywood, despite several memorable roles, particularly her portrayal of a housekeeper in Alfred Hitchcock's film "Rebecca," which earned her an Oscar nomination. Debuting on stage in her native Australia in 1918, she earned a reputation as one of the best theater actresses in New York theaters; her Lady Macbeth (in the 1937 and 1941 productions) is almost legendary. A striking woman who lacked the conventional beauty of the most successful female stars, Anderson was recognized as a character actress from the very beginning. In 1984, she began appearing in the long-running soap opera "Santa Barbara."
