Richard Kind

Early Life and Education

Richard Kind was born in Trenton, New Jersey, to Alice, a homemaker, and Samuel Kind, a jeweler who owned "La Vake's Jewelry" in Princeton, New Jersey. He grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with his younger sister, Joanna, and attended school with fellow actor Robert Curtis-Brown. Kind graduated from high school in 1974 and from Northwestern University in 1978. He also studied in Chicago and Santa Monica.

Television Career

One of Kind's earliest and most notable roles is Dr. Mark Devanow on "Mad About You," which he played throughout its run, although his appearances became less frequent after he joined "Spin City." Kind has also been a regular on "Spin City" since its inception. He created the character of Addison Mizner in Stephen Sondheim's "Bounce" and has appeared on Broadway in "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife," "The Producers," and "Sly Fox." In 2005, he starred in the film version of "The Producers."

Voice Acting

Kind has also done extensive voice work, including Larry the Anaconda in "The Wild," Clark in the radio ad campaign for "Lewis and Clark Expedition," Molt in Disney/Pixar's "Bug's Life," Van in "Cars," and narrated "Disney's Go Baby" and voiced Tom in "Tom and Jerry: The Movie." He currently has regular roles in "Kim Possible" and "The Penguins of Madagascar."

Film and Minor Television Roles

Most of Kind's film and television roles have been relatively small. He played an archaeologist, Gary Meyers, in "Stargate," appeared as Andy, Larry's cousin, in three episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and has reprised the role. In 2006, Kind guest-starred in "Stargate: Atlantis," making him the only actor to play a character in both a "Stargate" film and a television series, albeit different roles. He periodically plays hypochondriac Harvey Corman on "Scrubs." Kind played Hugo, an astronomer who murdered his colleague for credit for discovering a new planet, on "Psych" and a wealthy philanthropist who murders his half-sister and niece to protect his charitable donations in "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Personal Life and Friendship with George Clooney

Kind is a close friend of actor and director George Clooney, who was a groomsman at Kind's wedding to Dana Stanley in 1999. Kind later served as a casting director on Clooney's directorial debut, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." Kind later played himself in the short-lived HBO series "Unscripted," which was executive produced by Clooney.

Current Projects

Kind continues to be active in television, and he has a film, "Fancypants," scheduled for release in 2010.
