Juhan Parts: A Political Journey from Controversial Auditor to Minister of Economy

Early Life and Education
Juhan Parts was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and graduated from Tallinn Secondary School No. 1. He went on to study law at the University of Tartu. Upon graduating, Parts began his career at the Ministry of Justice.
Chief Auditor and Political Rise
In spring 1998, Parts was appointed as Chief Auditor at the instigation of Minister Mihkel Oviir. He served in this role until 2002, during which time he gained a reputation as a reform-minded official.
Founding of Res Publica and Entry into Politics
Parts capitalized on his popularity to launch his political career with a new party named Res Publica, which he chaired. The party positioned itself as a group of young, pragmatic, and economically liberal individuals.
Premiership and Resignation
In the 2003 Riigikogu elections, Res Publica performed surprisingly well and formed a new government coalition, with Parts becoming Prime Minister. However, his tenure was cut short in March 2005 when the Riigikogu passed a vote of no confidence in Justice Minister Ken-Marti Vaher.
Post-Premiership
Parts' term as Prime Minister ended on April 12, 2005, when the Riigikogu approved Andrus Ansip as his successor. With the merger of Res Publica and the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica in 2006, Parts became a member of the newly unified party.
Minister of Economy and Communications
Since April 4, 2007, Parts has served as Estonia's Minister of Economy and Communications.
Personal Life
Parts was married to Merle Parts, a judge, with whom he had a son, Toomas-Hendrik, and a daughter, Pille-Riin. He is currently in a relationship with Daisy Tauk, a lawyer who is 10 years his junior.
