Jules Bordet

Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet was a Belgian bacteriologist and immunologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1919 for his discoveries in the field of immunology.

Early Life and Education

Bordet was born on June 13, 1870, in Soignies, Belgium. He received his medical degree from the University of Brussels in 1892.

Research at the Pasteur Institute

From 1894 to 1901, Bordet worked in the laboratory of Ilya Mechnikov at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. During this time, he conducted groundbreaking research on immunity and developed the method of complement fixation, which became the basis for the Wassermann test for syphilis.

Pasteur Institute of Brussels

In 1901, Bordet returned to Belgium and established the Pasteur Institute in Brussels, where he served as director until 1940. He also taught bacteriology at the University of Brussels from 1907 to 1935.

Immunological Discoveries

Bordet's major scientific contributions were in the field of immunology. He demonstrated that immune reactions are based on physico-chemical processes. He discovered two types of sera with antimicrobial properties: complement-containing sera, which are present in serum before immunization, and antibody-containing sera, which are produced as a result of vaccination. In 1906, he isolated the bacillus responsible for whooping cough. In 1921, he established the nature of the immune reactions of agglutination and precipitation.

Legacy

Bordet's pioneering work laid the foundation for modern immunology and contributed significantly to the understanding of infectious diseases. His discoveries have had a profound impact on the development of immunotherapies and diagnostic tests. Jules Bordet passed away on April 6, 1961, at the age of 90.
