Biography of Jules Demersseman
Jules Demersseman was a French flutist and composer. He was born on the northern border of France, near Belgium. At the age of 11, he became a student of Jean-Louis Tulou at the Paris National Conservatory. Within a year, he won his first prize there and soon became one of the most famous flutists of his time. However, he was unable to become a professor at the conservatory because, like his teacher, he refused to play the Boehm system flute, which had already gained popularity in France at that time. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 33 due to tuberculosis.
Works and Contributions
Demersseman is the author of numerous compositions for the flute, the most popular of which is the "Sixth Concert Solo, op. 82," also known as the "Italian Concerto." He is also one of the first French composers to write music for the newly created saxophone at that time. Despite his short life, Demersseman left a significant impact on the world of flute music and his compositions continue to be performed and admired by flutists around the world.
