Biography of Jules Henri Poincaré
Jules Henri Poincaré was a French mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. He was not well-liked by the Soviet government, as the leader of the global proletariat referred to him as a "typical bourgeois idealist." Despite this, Poincaré's name frequently appeared in specialized works, as his conclusions and formulas were indispensable in the fields of mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Some of his theories even found practical applications. For instance, in the late 19th century, Poincaré developed the theory of dynamical systems and topology, which led to the discovery of "attractors" by the remarkable Russian mathematician and physicist A.A. Andronov around 1930. These abstract attractors, in turn, allowed for the calculation of radiotransmitters. Furthermore, the methods developed by Andronov using Poincaré's work extended beyond pure mathematics, evolving into the fields of "nonlinear dynamics" and "the theory of bifurcations and catastrophes," which are now used to calculate complex processes such as macroeconomics and demographics.
Poincaré's Philosophy
In his book "The Value of Science" (1905), Henri Poincaré demonstrated the inherent limitations of the scientific method. He argued that physical laws are only relatively valid for a specific time and observer, and can undergo radical changes. He proposed a sort of "evolution of laws" that adapt to the needs of each era. Poincaré concluded that the closest one can come to truth is through symbolic intuition, such as myths and religious imagery. In essence, he dismissed philosophy as mere "clericalism."
Interestingly, some "nativists" within the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, who had a disdain for the Jewish cosmopolitan Albert Einstein, aided the publication of Henri Poincaré's three-volume work in the USSR. This was because Poincaré had published an article titled "On the Measurement of Time" containing the principle of relativity ten years prior to Einstein (who only cited it half a century later). Additionally, in 1905, Poincaré independently released the monograph "Dynamics of the Electron," which contained the fundamental principles of the special theory of relativity. There was never a dispute over priority between the two great scholars. For Poincaré, it was enough that his theory was mathematically consistent and therefore "beautiful." The French genius did not believe in reason, he simply utilized it.
