Julie Grbac: Australian Fashion Designer
Early Life and Education:Julie Grbac, an Australian fashion designer, was born and raised in Brisbane. She honed her skills at Gateway TAFE in fashion basics before pursuing further education at Central Saint Martins College in London, the alma mater of renowned designers such as Stella McCartney and John Galliano.
Fashion Journey:
In London, Grbac gained experience at the exclusive invitation-only boutique Voyage, where she assisted in designing. She later returned to Australia to work at various fashion companies as a seamstress but always aspired to launch her own label.
Grbac Label Launch:
In 2002, Grbac established her namesake label, Grbac. Her first store opened in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley but closed after two years. Grbac then relocated her workshop to her mother's basement, where she created designs that gained national attention. Her signature style showcased long, feminine, and luxurious silk dresses.
Project Runway Triumph:
In 2008, Grbac was selected to participate in the Australian version of "Project Runway." She put her own project on hold, believing that the show could elevate her career. Despite the demanding challenges, Grbac thrived, showcasing her ethereal silk designs that resonated with the fashion world. She emerged victorious as the first winner of the reality competition. Her most notable creation was a dress worn by singer Kelly Rowland at a concert honoring Prince Albert of Monaco.
Post-Show Success:
The win brought Grbac $100,000, a new Fiat, and opportunities including a Melbourne Fashion Festival appearance and a six-page magazine spread. She also married her fiancé, Paul, in a private ceremony in 2008. A grander celebration took place in 2009 at St Stephens Cathedral in Brisbane, where 200 guests attended, including fellow "Project Runway" contestants. Grbac wore three custom-made dresses throughout the wedding festivities.
Expansion and Recognition:
Grbac continues to expand her label and plans to open more stores across Australia. She has recently presented her collections at the L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Week. Today, Julie Grbac remains a respected and influential fashion designer in the Australian fashion industry.
