Down Syndrome: A Genetic Condition
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by an extra chromosome, typically resulting in physical characteristics such as a round head, flattened face, low muscle tone, and an epicanthal fold on the inner corner of the eye. Cognitive impairments may vary in severity, from mild to profound.
A Mother's Love
When their mother, Grazyna, was 40, she gave birth to twins, unaware of Michael's Down syndrome until he was born. Advanced maternal age increases the risk of Down syndrome due to higher chances of chromosomal abnormalities.
Michael and Julia: Growing Together
Julia and Michael's growth together has brought unique lessons for both. Julia highlights Michael's sensitivity to sensory overload and his calming response to the tranquility of the ocean. "He loves the quiet and the peace," she says.

While Julia went off to university, her bond with Michael remained strong. Every weekend, Michael and their mother would visit, and despite his initial reluctance, Julia knew how to "melt his heart" by promising a beach visit. "The waves just mesmerize him," she says.

In 2018, Julia launched "Beyond the Waves" as a blog inspired by Michael's love for the ocean. It aims to educate and empower individuals with disabilities and those supporting them. "There's nothing I would change about my brother," Julia declares. "Nothing is more rewarding than being a part of this journey."
