Julian del Casal, born in Havana, Cuba, on November 7, 1863, is hailed as the father of Cuban Modernism. His poetry is characterized by its escapism, pessimism, and finely crafted form and musicality.

Early Life and Career

Casal's early life was marked by the loss of his mother when he was just five years old. He began writing poetry at the age of 18 while pursuing a law degree at the University of Havana. However, his passion for literature led him to abandon his studies.

Journey to Europe and Literary Influences

In 1888, Casal embarked on a trip to Europe, aiming to reach Paris. However, he settled in Madrid, where he encountered the leading poets of Spain. During this time, he was influenced by Spanish Romanticism, which shaped the style of his early poems.

Return to Cuba and Literary Evolution

Upon his return to Havana, Casal published his first poetry collection, "Hojas al Viento" (Leaves in the Wind), in 1890. In the following years, his poetry evolved towards Parnassianism and Symbolism, characterized by deep pessimism, melancholy, musicality, and the portrayal of exotic landscapes.

Death by Laughter
