Early Life and Background

Julianna Peña was born on August 19, 1989, in Spokane, Washington. As the youngest of four children, she grew up in a diverse family with Venezuelan and Mexican heritage. After graduating from high school in 2007, Peña attended community college and pursued athletics.

Journey to MMA

Peña's path to mixed martial arts (MMA) was unexpected. She initially turned to kickboxing as a way to lose weight and vent her aggression. However, it soon evolved into a serious passion and life's purpose. As a devout Christian, Peña believes that her path in fighting was predestined and that she fulfills her purpose and God's will in the octagon.

Professional MMA Career

Peña's professional MMA debut came on May 9, 2009, against Relin Harney. She secured a victory via rear-naked choke, a technique she would later master and utilize as a signature move. Peña went on to win her next four fights, establishing an undefeated streak.

Setbacks and UFC Triumph

In April 2012, Peña suffered her first loss to Sarah Moras. The defeat was followed by another setback against Dianna Bennett in 2013. Undeterred, she persevered and signed a contract with UFC in November that year. However, a knee injury sidelined her for an extended period.

After her return to the octagon, Peña won her first three UFC fights against Milana Dudieva, Jessica Eye, and Cat Zingano. Her knockout victory over Zingano in the first round was named Performance of the Night.

Pregnancy and Return

In 2017, Peña faced Valentina Shevchenko and lost, despite her pre-fight declaration of crushing her opponent. She then announced an indefinite hiatus due to pregnancy. Peña became a mother in January 2018, giving birth to her daughter Issa.

In 2019, Peña returned to the octagon, alternating victories with defeats. She defeated Nicco Montano, lost to Germaine de Randamie, but rebounded with a win over Sara McMann.

UFC Championship

On December 11, 2021, Peña shocked the world by defeating legendary Brazilian Amanda Nunes and capturing the UFC bantamweight championship. Peña dominated Nunes with a combination of striking and grappling, ending the fight with a rear-naked choke.
