Growing up in a village with two brothers, she discovered her love for performance at an early age and made her stage debut at Cumberland County High School.

Emery pursued her theatrical education at Webster Conservatory in St. Louis, where she received the Marsha Mason Scholarship. In 1998, she earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee in "Gypsy" at the Marriott Lincolnshire Theater.
