Biography of Julie Chu
Julie Chu (born March 13, 1982) is an American ice hockey player and forward for the women's national team. She currently resides in Minneapolis, where she trains for national team matches. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall, Chu hails from Fairfield, Connecticut, although she primarily lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts during her college years.
Early Life and Family
Julie Chu's father, Va, is originally from Guangzhou, Guangdong province, China. Va and his mother moved to Hong Kong when he was just one year old, as his mother did not want to raise him in communist China. In 1967, the family was able to relocate to New York, where Va soon met his future wife Miriam at a youth group in their local church. Miriam is of half Chinese and half Puerto Rican descent. As a child, Miriam was actively involved in soccer and figure skating before transitioning to hockey. It was through Miriam that Julie developed a passion for sports, particularly hockey.
Education and Career
Julie Chu attended Choate Rosemary Hall and graduated in 2001. She initially postponed her admission to Harvard, although she had already been accepted, until after the 2002 Winter Olympics. Chu became the first Asian and Chinese player to represent the United States in Olympic ice hockey. She has since competed in the Winter Olympics three times, in 2002, 2006, and 2010. In 2007, she was awarded the Patty Kazmaier Award as the best female ice hockey player. During her time at Harvard, Chu became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history and served as the team captain. In 2007, she graduated with honors with a degree in psychology.
Accomplishments
In addition to her Olympic participation, Julie Chu has also competed in multiple World Championships. She won the championship title in 2005, 2008, and 2009, and earned silver medals in 2001, 2004, and 2007. Chu was also recognized as the top scorer at the 2009 Women's World Championship, with ten points (five goals, five assists). She has been named to the All-American team three times.
Overall, Julie Chu has established herself as one of the most accomplished and influential players in women's ice hockey. Her dedication, skill, and numerous achievements have solidified her legacy as a role model for aspiring athletes.
