Jakub Polaček: From Ostrava to the NHL and Beyond
Early Career in EuropeJakub Polaček was born on July 12, 1991, in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. He developed his hockey skills in the youth system of HC Vitkovice, playing in various junior and international competitions. In 2009, he moved to North America and joined the Prince Edward Island Rocket, a team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Over two seasons, he totaled 20 goals and 60 assists in 137 games.
NHL Draft and Chicago Wolves
In 2010, Polaček's NHL rights were acquired by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Entry Draft. He signed with the team in 2011 and spent the 2011-12 season with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL).
AHL and ECHL Stint
During the 2013-14 season, Polaček played for the AHL's Utica Comets and the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings. In December 2013, he was released from his contract. He returned to the Czech Republic and joined HC Sparta Praha of the Czech Extraliga.
HC Sparta Praha: Success and Recognition
In his two seasons with Sparta Praha, Polaček won a bronze and a silver medal in the Czech Extraliga. His performances earned him recognition and led to a contract with the KHL team Sibir Novosibirsk in 2016.
KHL and Sochi
Polaček spent two seasons with Sibir Novosibirsk before joining HC Sochi in October 2017. He has established himself as a solid defender in the KHL.
International Career
Polaček has represented the Czech Republic at various levels of international hockey, including the World Junior Championships and the World Championships. In 2018, he debuted for the senior national team at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
