Sos Airapetyan: A Soviet Hockey Legend
Early Life and CareerSos Airapetyan was born into a football family, but his passion for field hockey ignited in 1976. Within a few years, he had become one of the Soviet Union's leading defensemen.
Soviet Dominance
From 1978 to 1987, Airapetyan played for the prestigious clubs SKA Sverdlovsk and Dynamo Alma-Ata. During this period, he amassed an impressive record, winning eight USSR Championships, four USSR Cups, and two European Champions Cups.
National Team Success
Airapetyan was a vital member of the Soviet national field hockey team from 1978 to 1991. The team achieved remarkable success during this era, becoming bronze medalists at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, winning the Intercontinental Cup in 1981, and reaching the final of the European Championship in 1983.
Boycott and Triumph
In 1984, the Soviet Union boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics. However, the team participated in the "Friendship-84" tournament instead, where they emerged victorious. This triumph earned Airapetyan and his teammates the prestigious title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
Overseas Journey
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Airapetyan moved to Hamburg, Germany, in 1992. He played for the Hamburger Polo Club from 1992 to 2004, helping them win silver medals in the German Championship in 2004.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring from playing, Airapetyan transitioned into coaching. He has assisted in the training of his son, Levon Airapetyan, an Armenian national footballer. Airapetyan's legacy continues to inspire future generations of field hockey enthusiasts.
