Biography of Julie Payette

Early Life and Education

Julie Payette was born on October 20, 1963, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She completed her secondary education in Montreal in 1979 and went on to attend an international college in Atlantic, South Wales, United Kingdom in 1982. Payette then pursued her bachelor's degree in technical sciences at McGill University, graduating in 1986. She furthered her education by obtaining a master's degree in applied sciences from the University of Toronto in 1990.

Work in Scientific Institutions

From 1986 to 1988, Payette worked as a systems engineer in the Canadian branch of IBM. She continued her contract work with IBM from 1988 to 1991. In 1991, Payette joined the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, where she worked until 1992.

Space Activities

In June 1992, Payette became a member of the Canadian Space Agency astronaut corps. In August 1996, she began her training at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Payette's space mission took place from May 27 to June 6, 1999, as a flight specialist on the STS-96 mission aboard the Discovery spacecraft. The mission lasted for 9 days, 19 hours, 13 minutes, and 1 second. For her contributions, Payette was awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1999.
