Biography of Scott Edward Parazynski
Scott Edward Parazynski is an American astronaut who is known for his contributions to molecular biology research. He was born on July 28, 1961, in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. He spent his childhood in Palo Alto, California, and Evergreen, Colorado, which he considers his hometowns.
Education
Parazynski attended school in Dakar, Senegal, and Beirut, Lebanon, where his parents were living at the time. He then studied at the American School in Tehran, Iran, and the American School in Athens, Greece, where he completed his education in 1979. In 1983, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Stanford University. He later graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1989 and continued his medical training at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. In addition, he completed a 22-month medical training program in Denver, Colorado, after being selected as an astronaut candidate.
Career
Since 1990, Parazynski has been working at the NASA Ames Research Center, conducting research in molecular biology.
Space Activities
In March 1992, Parazynski joined the NASA Astronaut Group. In 1995, he trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, preparing for a mission on board the Russian space complex "Mir." However, he was removed from the training program due to his height exceeding the limitations of the Russian spacesuits. Despite this setback, Parazynski went on to complete four space missions.
Space Missions
- 1st mission: From November 3 to November 14, 1994, Parazynski served as a mission specialist on the space shuttle "Atlantis" for the STS-66 program, with a duration of 10 days, 22 hours, 34 minutes, and 2 seconds.
- 2nd mission: From September 25 to October 6, 1997, he worked as a mission specialist on the space shuttle "Atlantis" for the STS-86 program, with a duration of 10 days, 19 hours, 20 minutes, and 50 seconds.
- 3rd mission: From October 29 to November 7, 1998, Parazynski served as a mission specialist on the space shuttle "Endeavour" for the STS-95 program, with a duration of 8 days, 21 hours, 43 minutes, and 57 seconds.
- 4th mission: From April 19 to May 1, 2001, he worked as a mission specialist on the space shuttle "Endeavour" for a mission lasting 11 days, 21 hours, 30 minutes, and 0 seconds.
Awards and Honors
Parazynski has received the NASA Space Flight Medal for each of his four missions (in 1994, 1997, 1998, and 2001). He is also a member of the Aerospace Medical Association and the Space Studies Association.
