Early Life
Born in Ciceron, St. LuciaJuliana Alfred was born in the community of Ciceron, located in the South Castries district of St. Lucia. She endured the loss of her father at a young age, when she was only 12 years old.
Education
St. Lucia to Jamaica to TexasAlfred began her education at the Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School in St. Lucia (2013-2015). She then moved to Jamaica, where she attended St. Catherine High School from 2015 to 2018. Upon graduating high school, she went to Texas A&M University in the United States, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Youth Studies and Public Relations. Alfred successfully balanced her academics with her athletic endeavors.
Athletic Career
Early SuccessesAlfred's athletic career began with early success. She emerged as the Central American and Caribbean under-15 champion in 2015. In 2017, she was recognized as St. Lucia's Junior Sportswoman of the Year. At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, she won a silver medal in the girls' 100 meters, finishing behind Nigeria's Rosemary Chukwuma.
Rise to Prominence
Alfred's achievements continued to soar. In 2023, she competed at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, reaching the finals in both the 100 and 200 meters. She placed fifth in the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 meters. At the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Alfred triumphed as the women's 60-meter champion.
Olympic Glory
Her crowning achievement came at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she made history as the first Saint Lucian to win an Olympic medal. Alfred claimed gold in the women's 100 meters, clocking a time of 10.72 seconds and setting a new St. Lucian national record. She also secured the silver medal in the 200 meters, just 0.25 seconds behind American sprinter Gabrielle Thomas.
