Early Life and Resistance

Juliette Gréco was born on February 7, 1927, in Montpellier, France. Her father was Corsican, while her mother was French. She was primarily raised by her maternal grandparents.

During World War II, Gréco joined the Resistance movement following her mother's example. Despite being arrested, her young age protected her from deportation.

Post-War Paris and Rising Fame

In 1946, Gréco moved to Paris and quickly became a prominent figure in the bohemian Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. She embodied the disillusionment and poverty of French intellectuals in the post-war era through her songs. Her signature style included a black dress and long, flowing black hair.

Bohemian Circles and Hollywood

Gréco frequented the cafés of Saint-Germain, where she mingled with political and philosophical thinkers. She met Miles Davis and Jean Cocteau, who cast her in a small role in his 1949 film "Orpheus." Hollywood producer-director Darryl F. Zanuck also frequently invited her to star in his films during the 1960s and 1970s.

Marriages and Later Life

Gréco married three times. Her second husband was French actor Michel Piccoli, with whom she was married from 1966 to 1977. In 1988, she married Gérard Jouannest, to whom she remains married today.
