Early Life and Ordination

Jānis Pujats was born in Latvia in 1881. He pursued his theological education at the Seminary in Saint Petersburg and the theological faculty of the University of Latvia. On April 7, 1918, he was ordained a priest.

Service in Liepāja

From 1918 to 1944, Pujats served as the diocesan chancellor and curial judge in Liepāja. He was subsequently appointed vicar in Liepāja, a position he held from 1944 to 1958. On July 4, 1949, he was bestowed the title of Prelate of His Holiness.

Imprisonment and Pastoral Ministry

In 1958, Pujats was sentenced to forced labor for political reasons. After his release in 1960, he resumed his pastoral duties.

Appointment as Archbishop of Riga

Pujats was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Riga in 1962. In 1964, he was invited by Pope Paul VI to participate in the Second Vatican Council. On November 10, 1964, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Riga and titular bishop of Macriana Maior. He was ordained a bishop on November 18, 1964.

Cardinal of the Catholic Church

On February 2, 1983, Pujats was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II. Due to his advanced age (88 at the time), he was not eligible to participate in papal elections.

Leadership of the Catholic Church in Latvia

Pujats served as the Chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Latvia from 1970 to 1990. He played a pivotal role in the revival of the Catholic Church in Latvia after decades of Soviet suppression.
