Julius Koppel, a renowned Danish violinist and violist, made significant contributions to the classical music world.
Early Life and Education
Born into a musical family, Koppel was the brother of acclaimed composer Hermann David Koppel. He studied violin at the Copenhagen Conservatory under the tutelage of Thorvald Nielsen.
Orchestral Career
In 1934, Koppel joined the Royal Orchestra as a violinist, where he excelled and became its concertmaster from 1939 to 1979.
Koppel Quartet
Alongside his orchestral duties, Koppel founded the Koppel Quartet in 1945, playing the viola for 25 years. His wife, Else Marie Brun, served as first violinist.
Collaborations
Koppel formed close artistic partnerships with various musicians. He recorded his brother's Violin and Viola Concerto with Orchestra alongside Brun. They also performed Bach's Double Concerto and other works.
Connection to Holmboe
The Koppel family had a strong connection with Vagn Holmboe. In 1942, the Koppel brothers premiered Holmboe's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2. In 1947, Julius Koppel and Brun performed the premiere of Holmboe's Violin and Viola Concerto, written specifically for them to celebrate their escape from Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943.
Legacy
Julius Koppel's legacy extends beyond his own performances. He became a father to actress Susanne Brun-Koppel, who continued the family's artistic tradition. Koppel's contributions as a virtuoso, collaborator, and mentor have left an indelible mark on the Danish music scene.
