Julius von Gomperz

Julius von Gomperz was born on November 21, 1823, in Brno, Austria, into a Jewish family. His parents were Philipp Joshua Feibelman Gomperz and Henriette Auspitz. He had two notable brothers: Theodor Gomperz, a philosopher, and Max von Gomperz, a statesman. Heinrich Gomperz, the famous orientalist, was his nephew.
Business and Political Career
Gomperz became a successful industrialist and was elected chairman of the Brno Chamber of Commerce in 1859. He held this position until 1906, advocating for liberal economic policies and criticizing high tariffs. In 1861, he was elected a member of the Moravian Landtag and subsequently sent to the Reichstag in 1871.
Public Involvement
Beyond his business and political endeavors, Gomperz was actively involved in Jewish communal life. He served as chairman of the Jewish community in Brno for many years. He was also a prominent advocate for Jewish rights and interests.
Personal Life and Legacy
Gomperz married Caroline von Gomperz-Bettelheim, the sister of the philologist and translator Anton Bettelheim. The couple had a fulfilling life together. Julius von Gomperz passed away in his hometown of Brno on February 2, 1909. His legacy as a successful industrialist, political advocate, and community leader continues to be remembered today.
