Fred Kavli, an American multimillionaire and philanthropist of Norwegian descent, was born in 1927. During World War II, he and his brother supplied wood and fuel wood briquettes. Fred received his education in Applied Physics at the Norwegian University of Technology.

In 1956, Fred Kavli moved to America and in 1958, he founded KavliCo, a corporation focused on the development and production of sensors for aviation, spacecraft, and automobile engines. The company was highly successful and in 2000, Fred sold it for $340 million.

Fred Kavli's philanthropic efforts began in 2001 when he donated $7.5 million to the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). In recognition of his generosity, the institute was named the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in 2003.

In 2007, Fred Kavli established the Kavli Prize, a prestigious award recognizing outstanding achievements in astrophysics, nanotechnology, and neuroscience. The prize has since become one of the most esteemed awards in these fields.
