Biography of June Storey
June Storey was a Canadian-American actress who was active in the film industry from 1934 to 1949, primarily appearing in B-movies, including various westerns.
Early Life and Career
Mary June Storey was born on April 20, 1918, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In her youth, she moved to the United States with her family, first settling in Connecticut and then in California. The charming young girl caught the attention of the Fox Film Corporation, and in 1934, she made her debut as a student in Charles Reisner's musical "Student Tour," although she was uncredited. Her first significant role came as Greta in Irving Cummings' melodrama "Girls' Dormitory" alongside Herbert Marshall. From 1935 to 1938, Storey appeared in seven more films. One of them was Henry King's action film "In Old Chicago," where she portrayed Gretchen O'Leary. After three films without her name in the credits, Storey starred in the crime drama "Island in the Sky," the comedy "Orphans of the Street," and the film "Down in Arkansas." She signed a contract with Republic Pictures and became best known as the leading lady in ten films alongside Gene Autry between 1939 and 1940. The first three films of this series were westerns titled "South of the Border," "Colorado Sunset," and "Blue Montana Skies," all released in 1939. Storey often co-starred with Mary Lee, who played her younger sister in these films. However, her career suffered significantly when Autry was drafted into the army during World War II. In the 1940s, Storey settled for a few episodic roles before eventually leaving the profession and getting married. Her last credited role was as Rose Pendleton in Glenn Tryon's comedy "Miss Mink of 1949." In total, she appeared in 41 films.
Later Life and Legacy
Together with her husband, June moved to the state of Oregon, where they raised their children. In 1950, she was involved in a serious car accident but managed to recover. Storey then became a nurse, divorced her first husband, and married Lincoln Clark. She obtained American citizenship and dedicated a significant portion of her life to charitable work. In the 1980s, June participated in several western film festivals. She passed away from cancer on December 18, 1991, in Vista, California.
