Biography of Jurai Karlo Visner-Morgenstern

Jurai Karlo Visner-Morgenstern was a Croatian composer and choral conductor. He lived and worked in Zagreb from 1819 and initially served as a secretary and personal musician to Count Erdödy. He later directed the choir of the Zagreb Cathedral and was one of the founders of the Zagreb Musical Society in 1827. He also led its choir and music school. Among Visner-Morgenstern's students was Vatroslav Lisinski, the author of the first Croatian opera "Love and Malice" (1846), which was orchestrated by Visner-Morgenstern. Other notable students of Morgenstern include Fortunat Pintarić, Ivan Padovec, and others. He also collected Croatian musical folklore.

Visner-Morgenstern composed the Requiem (1823) in memory of Pope Pius VII, the opera "Alexis" (1826) based on the drama "Viola" by Joseph von Auersperg (now lost), as well as various chamber and church compositions. The chamber music of Morgenstern was recorded by the Zagreb Quartet.
