Jürgen Stroop: An SS Leader and General
Jürgen Stroop was an Obergruppenführer in the SS and a General in the Waffen-SS. He was one of the leaders involved in suppressing the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. Stroop also participated in the First World War. In 1932, he joined the NSDAP and later the SS, where he quickly rose through the ranks.
Suppression of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
In April 1943, upon Heinrich Himmler's decision, Stroop replaced Oberführer Ferdinand von Sammern-Frankenegg as the leader of the SS and police in Warsaw. He led the operation to suppress the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto and famously reported, "The Warsaw Ghetto is no more."
Activities in Greece and Trial
From September to November 1943, Stroop served as the SS leader in Greece. However, in 1947, he was sentenced to death by an American tribunal in Dachau for the execution of hostages in Greece. After being transferred to Polish authorities, he was again sentenced to death.
The Conversations of a Executioner
While in his death cell, Stroop was remarkably candid with his fellow inmates, discussing in detail the suppression of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and showing no remorse for his involvement in those events. Casimir Mocharski, an activist of the Home Army who was also imprisoned with him, was later pardoned and published a book titled "Conversations with the Executioner," which contained Stroop's accounts.
