Biography of Justine Pasek
Justine Pasek, a Panamanian model, UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and winner of the Miss Universe 2002 title, was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, with a mixture of Polish and Panamanian blood running through her veins. She spent only a year in Ukraine before her family moved back to Panama after her mother finished studying chemistry.
Early Life and Career
Most of Pasek's childhood was spent in Poland. She entered the modeling industry in 1996 when she participated in the "Chica Modelo" competition and won the title of "Best Editorial Model." As a model, Pasek worked on various television projects and fashion shows. She also appeared in calendars and commercials.
Pasek planned to study environmental engineering in New Zealand with her two younger brothers, Edward and Alvaro, and join the Smithsonian Research Center. However, her life took a different turn when she participated in the Miss Panama 2001 beauty pageant and won the title. This victory allowed her to represent Panama at the Miss Universe 2002 pageant held in Puerto Rico in May 2002. Although Pasek initially placed second, she was crowned Miss Universe after the winner, Oksana Fedorova from Russia, was dethroned for various reasons.
Miss Universe Reign
During her year as Miss Universe, Pasek traveled extensively, visiting countries such as Japan, Bali, Thailand, Egypt, Aruba, Ecuador, Peru, Cuba, Canada, and Mexico. She actively supported organizations combating HIV/AIDS and even opened the first center specializing in preventing the spread of the virus in Panama. Pasek officially resided in New York City during her reign.
Post-Miss Universe Career
In 2003, Pasek passed on the Miss Universe crown to Amelia Vega from the Dominican Republic and returned to her modeling career. She worked with Christian Dior, Panamanian tourist organizations, and trade groups in Spain, Italy, and Germany. Pasek also played a significant role in organizing Panama Weeks in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC.
Pasek achieved considerable success as a UN Goodwill Ambassador, actively fighting hunger in her homeland. She established centers that have already saved more than 5000 malnourished children.
