Life and Education

Kadri Simson was born into a political family in Estonia. Her father, Aadu Must, was a prominent politician. Simson graduated with honors in history from the University of Tartu in 2000. She then earned a master's degree in political science from University College London in 2003.

Early Career

Simson began her career in the late 1990s, working in the university library and as an advisor to the Mayor of Tallinn from 2001 to 2002. From 2003 to 2007, she served as General Secretary of the Centre Party.

Political Career

Simson entered politics in 1995 by joining the Centre Party. She was elected to the Tallinn City Council in 2005 and served as a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) from 2007 to 2019. From 2009 to 2016, she chaired the Centre Party's parliamentary group.

In 2016, Simson became Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure in the government of Jüri Ratas, a position she held until 2019. She unsuccessfully ran for the leadership of the Centre Party in 2015, losing to Edgar Savisaar.

European Union Commissioner

On December 1, 2019, Simson was appointed European Commissioner for Energy. In this role, she is responsible for the development and implementation of the European Union's energy policy.
