Kaffe Fasset was born in San Francisco in 1937. At the age of nineteen, he enrolled in the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where he studied for only three months before pursuing other interests. In 1964, he moved to England.
Inspiration and Career Beginnings
During a visit to a Scottish yarn mill with fellow designer Bill Gibb, Fasset became captivated by the yarn production process. He purchased 20 different skeins of yarn and taught himself to knit on the train ride back to London. His first knitted design soon graced the cover of Vogue Knitting magazine.
Collaborations and Recognition
Fasset's early creations caught the attention of designers Missoni and Bill Gibb, who incorporated his pieces into their collections. These collections were an immediate success, with celebrities such as Barbra Streisand, Lauren Bacall, and Shirley MacLaine becoming fans of Fasset's unique designs.
Television Success
In 1985, Fasset launched "Pebble Mill at One," a popular television series that focused on knitting and sewing. His engaging personality and expert demonstrations inspired countless viewers to embrace their own creativity. Following the success of this show, Fasset received numerous offers to host shows on major networks, including BBC.
Global Impact
Fasset's television shows were translated into multiple languages and broadcast internationally in countries such as Japan and Canada. In 1998, he released the film "Kaffe's Color Quest," which explored national costumes, traditions, and his own travels. In 1999, he launched a radio show called "A Stitch in Time."
