Kais Saied: Profile of Tunisia's Current President
Early Life and EducationKais Saied was born on February 22, 1958, in Tunis, Tunisia. He earned a DEA diploma in Public International Law from the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Tunis. He also graduated from the International Academy of Constitutional Law in Tunis and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in San Remo, Italy.
Academic Career
Saied began teaching at the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Political Science at the University of Sousse in 1986. From 1999 onwards, he taught at the Faculty of Law, Political, and Social Sciences at the University of Tunis. He served as Head of the Department of Public Law at the University of Sousse from 1994 to 1999.
Role in the 2011 Revolution and Constitutional Committee
Saied was an active participant in the 2011 Tunisian Revolution. He criticized Mohamed Ghannouchi, who assumed temporary presidential powers after Ben Ali's departure, and joined the expert committee drafting the new constitution.
2019 Presidential Election
Saied ran as an independent candidate in the 2019 presidential election. His platform included decentralizing political and administrative power. He finished first in the first round of voting, advancing to the second round against Nabil Karoui.
Presidency
Kais Saied took office as President of Tunisia on October 23, 2019. He is the first president born after Tunisia's independence.
Domestic Policies
Saied has proposed a radical change to Tunisia's political system, advocating for a three-tiered democracy model where municipal and provincial representatives would elect deputies to the national parliament. However, this constitutional reform requires the approval of two-thirds of the parliament.
Foreign Policy
Saied has prioritized relations with Algeria and Libya in his foreign policy. His approach towards the West has not been fully clarified.
Personal Life
Kais Saied is married to Ichraf Chebil, a judge. They have three children: a son, Amrou, and two daughters, Sarah and Mouna.
