Katherine Elizabeth King, also known as Kaki King, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Born on August 24, 1979, in Atlanta, Georgia, King's musical journey began at a young age, encouraged by her father.

Early Musical Influences and School

Initially drawn to the guitar, King eventually found her focus on drums and spent her high school years playing in school bands with classmate Morgan Jahnig, who later joined Old Crow Medicine Show as an upright bassist. After graduating from Westminster Private School in 1998, King pursued higher education at New York University.

Return to Guitar and New York City

It was in New York City that King re-embraced the guitar and began performing occasionally, even gracing the undergrounds of the city's subway system. Determined to avoid being pigeonholed as a solo instrumentalist, King consciously shifted her musical direction with her third album, "...Until We Felt Red."

"...Until We Felt Red" and New Sound

Released in 2006, "...Until We Felt Red" featured more vocals and a post-rock sound thanks to the addition of an electric guitar and a full band. This album, produced by Tortoise's John McEntire, expanded King's musical horizons.
