Ron Keel: A Biography
Early Life and CareerRon Keel, born in 1961 in Savannah, Georgia, is a guitarist and vocalist best known for his work with the rock band "Keel." He began his career as a rock musician in Tennessee, where he joined the band "Lust." Keel later moved to Los Angeles, where he formed the rock group "Steeler" with notable figures in the hard rock scene, including guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, bassist Rik Fox, and drummer Mark Edwards.
Steeler and Solo Career
"Steeler" released a self-titled album in 1984 on the Shrapnel Records label, which was well-received and sold successfully. After the band disbanded, Keel auditioned for the legendary rock group "Black Sabbath" but did not secure a spot. He then formed his own project, simply named "Keel." Signing a contract with Gold Mountain / A&M Records, Keel embarked on a tour, and their debut album sold around 2 million copies. From 1984 to 1989, "Keel" released five studio albums, including "Lay Down the Law" (1984), "The Right to Rock" (1985), "The Final Frontier" (1986), "Keel" (1987), and "Larger Than Live" (1989). Gene Simmons of the band "KISS" performed with "Keel" on two of their albums in 1985 and 1986.
During the late 1980s, Keel also pursued a solo career under the name "Ronnie Lee Keel," focusing on country music. In 2000, he formed the band "IronHorse," which blended country and hard rock elements. The group released two albums, "IronHorse" in 2001 and "Bring it on" in 2004.
Later Projects
In 1991, after the release of "Keel's" album in 1989, Keel founded the all-female rock band "Fair Game." Two of their songs were featured in the soundtrack of the 1992 film "Bad Channels." "Fair Game" released the album "Beauty and the Beast" in 1991. In 1997, Keel collaborated with Japanese rock guitarist Akihito Kinoshita and his band "Saber Tiger," contributing to one of their most successful albums.
After leaving "IronHorse" in 2007 to focus on other projects, Keel resurrected his band "Keel" and returned to his own project in 2008, forming the group "K2 Featuring Ron Keel." This new band incorporated material from Keel's earlier years into their repertoire.
