Kálmán Darányi
Kálmán Darányi, a Hungarian politician, served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1936 to 1938.
Early Life and Education
Darányi was born into an influential noble family; his uncle, Ignác Darányi, served as Hungary's Minister of Agriculture from 1895 to 1903. He pursued legal education and worked as a civil servant for a period.
Political Career
Darányi entered Parliament in 1927 and was appointed Minister of Agriculture in 1935. Following the death of Gyula Gömbös, he became Prime Minister.
Domestic Policies
Darányi restored secret ballots in elections, which had been abolished, but further reduced the number of eligible voters. He also expanded the powers of Miklós Horthy. The cabinet passed anti-Semitic laws during his tenure.
Foreign Policy
Darányi continued his predecessors' policy of revising the Treaty of Trianon in foreign affairs. He announced the need for significant army rearmament (the "Győr Program") in March 1938. However, he resigned shortly after the Anschluss of Austria.
Later Life and Legacy
Darányi served as Speaker of Parliament from 1938 to 1939. He died in office on November 1, 1939. Darányi is remembered for his attempts to modernize Hungary while balancing the influence of fascist and conservative factions.
