Kamran Gürün: A Turkish Politician and Historian
Kamran Gürün was a prominent Turkish politician and historian who played a significant role in the international arena.
Leadership of CENTO
In 1978, Gürün was elected as the 8th and ultimately final Secretary-General of the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), a military alliance between Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and the United Kingdom. He became the third Turkish citizen to hold this position, while Pakistan and Iran had each provided two Secretary-Generals.
The Decline of CENTO
During Gürün's tenure, CENTO experienced a period of decline. Iran withdrew from the organization in March 1979 following the Iranian Revolution, and Pakistan followed suit. As a result, only NATO members Turkey and the United Kingdom remained. In the same year, Turkey initiated the termination of the CENTO treaty, which had effectively lost its purpose.
Historical Research
Following the dissolution of CENTO, Gürün turned his attention to Armenian history and Armenian-Turkish relations. He meticulously studied archival materials, including those commissioned by the Turkish authorities, related to the unrecognized Armenian Genocide of 1915. His research culminated in the publication of several works on the topic, including "To the History of the Armenian Question" and "Armenian Files."
