Early Life and Education
Born in Houston, Texas, Karamo Brown grew up in Coral Springs, Florida. He has three older sisters. Of Jamaican and Cuban descent, Brown identified as gay at age 15. He attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, graduating in 1999.
After graduating from Florida A&M University, a historically black college, Brown worked in social work for almost a decade. In 2007, he learned that he was the father of a 10-year-old boy named Jason, whom he was granted custody of later that year. In 2010, Brown adopted Jason's half-brother Chris. Brown moved to Los Angeles with his two sons in 2011.
In May 2018, Brown became engaged to his partner of eight years, director Ian Jordan. They amicably separated around June 2020.
Television Career
Reality TelevisionBrown began his television career in 2004 as the first openly gay African American cast member on MTV's reality show "The Real World: Philadelphia." He later competed in "The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno II," where he was eliminated in the sixth episode.
Brown returned to reality television on TV One's "The Next 15" in 2016, which followed him and five other reality stars.
Television Hosting and Production
Brown has hosted segments on HLN's "Dr. Drew on Call" and "The Young Turks" on YouTube. He was a host and producer for HuffPost Live and a regular guest host on "Access Hollywood Live." In 2014, Brown became the host and producer of the "Own Show" segment.
He hosted the MTV show "Are You the One? Second Chances." Since 2018, Brown has been a culture expert on Netflix's reboot of "Queer Eye."
Other Television Appearances
In 2019, Brown appeared in Taylor Swift's "You Need to Calm Down" music video. He competed on season 28 of "Dancing with the Stars" with professional dancer Jenna Johnson.
Activism
Brown is an active advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. He is a partner with the Janssen pharmaceutical company in the Positively Fearless campaign, which empowers the gay and bisexual community.
Brown co-founded 6in10.org in 2015 to combat HIV stigma and provide mental health support to the black LGBTQ+ community. He volunteers as a youth counselor at the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Brown has worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Black Justice Coalition as a health and wellness ambassador. He focuses primarily on the black LGBTQ+ community, which he feels is often overlooked.
Brown was invited by the Obama administration to work with the White House on policies and legislation supporting LGBTQ+ youth and their allies in after-school programs. He also visited Capitol Hill to advocate for increased funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.
