Early Life and EducationKarel Domin was born in P?ibram, Czech Republic. After completing high school, he pursued botany at Charles University in Prague, graduating in 1906.
Professorship and Scientific Career
In 1916, Domin became a professor of botany. He specialized in phytogeography, geobotany, and plant taxonomy. He was elected a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, published numerous scientific papers, and established a botanical institute at the university. The Domin Scale, named after him, is commonly used to represent the classification of a standardized area by the number of plant species found within it.
University Rector and Activism
During the 1933-34 academic year, Domin served as rector of Charles University. He actively participated in the struggle over historical academic regalia between the Czech and German universities of Prague, which culminated in street clashes and civil unrest.
Political Involvement
From 1935 to 1939, Domin served in parliament. Following the Munich Agreement, he co-founded the semi-fascist political movement Akce n?rodn? obrody (National Revival Action).
