Politician and Stateswoman
Carola Schouten is a Dutch politician and stateswoman who has served as Minister of Social Affairs and Employment since 2022. Born on October 3, 1968, in Leiderdorp, she is a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA).
Early Life and Education
Schouten attended Aloisius College in The Hague before pursuing Applied Physics at Delft University of Technology. She also studied at the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) in 1995.
Early Career
Beginning her career at McKinsey & Company, Schouten also worked as a project manager for the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). In 2003, she became a director at AFM and later the State Secretary for Economic Affairs in the second and third Balkenende cabinets.
Parliamentary Career
Elected to the House of Representatives in 2006, Schouten held various directorships at ING Group from 2008-2020. She served as CEO of ING Bank in Paris from 2015-2020 before becoming chair of the board of the insurance company Coöperatie VGZ.
Leadership Roles
Schouten has held leadership roles in several organizations. She chaired the supervisory board of SOS Children's Villages from 2007-2015, was vice-chair of Cordaid, and was a member of the supervisory board of Deltares. She was also vice-chair of the International Chamber of Commerce and a member of INSEAD's board.
Ministerial Appointment
In 2022, Schouten was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the fourth Rutte cabinet. She is responsible for policies related to social welfare, labor market, and healthcare.
