Professional Career
Between 1921 and 1926, Appen worked as a set designer at both the Municipal Theater and the Frankfurt Opera. In 1926, he moved to Berlin, where he lived as a freelance artist until 1929. Collaboration with Berliner Ensemble
In 1953, Appen began collaborating with Bertolt Brecht's Berliner Ensemble theater company. He moved to Berlin in 1954 and became the theater's chief designer. He held this position until 1981 while also designing productions for other theaters in East Germany, the Kammerspiele in Munich, and the National Theatre in London.
