Paul Doktor: Austrian Violist and Member of the Busch Quartet
Early Life and CareerPaul Doktor was an Austrian violist who gained prominence as a member of the renowned Busch Quartet, where he played for 24 years, from 1921 to 1945. He was also known for his collaborations with the quartet's leader, Adolf Busch, in other ensembles, including performances of Mozart's Concert Symphony.
Association with Max Reger
Doktor maintained a close friendship with German composer Max Reger. Reger planned to dedicate his Fourth Suite for Viola Solo to Doktor, but his untimely death left only one theme of the suite complete. Adolf Busch used this theme as the basis for his own suite for viola solo.
Busch Quartet and Beyond
Doktor's tenure with the Busch Quartet spanned its most significant period. Together with Busch, Henri Marteau, and Hermann Busch, he formed one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of the interwar era. The quartet's repertoire included works by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Schoenberg.
