Early Life and Education

Yuri Gandelsman was born on May 22, 1959, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, USSR. The son of engineers, he displayed a talent for music at a young age. Gandelsman studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned violists Genrikh Talalyan and Valentin Berlinsky.

Professional Career in Russia

In 1974, Gandelsman joined the prestigious Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Kiril Kondrashin. From 1980 onwards, he became concertmaster of the viola section and soloist in the "Moscow Virtuosi" ensemble, led by Vladimir Spivakov.

Immigration to Israel and Recognition

In 1990, Gandelsman immigrated to Israel, where he joined the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as principal violist under Zubin Mehta. He also served as professor of viola at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance until 2000.

International Acclaim in the United States

In 2001, Gandelsman joined the Fine Arts Quartet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has since become a renowned pedagogue, teaching viola at Michigan State University College of Music. His reputation as a gifted violist has earned him international recognition.

Notable Family Members

Yuri Gandelsman's brother, Alexander Zhurabin, is a renowned composer. His son, Jonathan Gandelsman, is an accomplished violinist and soloist with the "Silk Road Project." Additionally, Gandelsman's cousin is the poet and translator Vladimir Arkadyevich Gandelsman.
